11.21Inglorious Basterds – Review
Umm.
Probably my least favorite Tarantino film.
All the elements were there. Great acting. Intense scenes of well written dialogue. A fantastic bad guy in Hans Landa.
I just couldn’t get into it.
(possible spoilers ahead)
Part of what ruined it for me was all the hype about the Basterds themselves. For all the talk about all the Nazi killing and how gory and hilarious it was … they actually did very little of it … compared to the hype. The movie wants us to believe that they are these amazing guys who the Germans are afraid of, but you rarely ever see them doing any of it. It’s all aftermath and talking. Or that intensely long buildup in the bar scene and then 2 seconds of chaos and then, you guessed it, more talking.
Now, you’re probably saying, “Sean, that’s every Tarantino film.” And you’d be right. I just didn’t like it in this one for some reason. I just found myself trying to will the scenes forward so they would get to the point.
It’s not a bad movie … there are some really funny parts and again, the “bad guy” was incredible.
But I don’t think I’d ever care to see it again.
Give me a choice to watch Inglorious Basterds or a Kill Bill … or a Pulp Fiction … or a Reservoir Dogs and it’s an easy choice which one gets another viewing.
